In 2003, I had three reasons to run for the Board of Education: my children. In the fall, Claudia will enter Columbia High School, Helen will enter Maplewood Middle School and Willy will continue at Tuscan Elementary School. I am determined that each of them — and every other child in our schools — continues to receive the rich, challenging education our school district delivers.
Our schools should provide all students with the opportunity to reach their maximum potential. We must maintain a focus on achievement for all. I am committed to three fundamental principles:

- high expectations for every student
- rigorous curriculum in every subject
- differentiated instruction in every classroom
After three years on the Board of Education, I have gained a deep understanding of the challenges we face, principally the achievement gap and a school finance system that unfairly penalizes communities like ours and forces painful cuts every year. I realize this landscape can make us anxious. But we have made measurable progress. Parents and teachers have helped forge a plan to maintain that progress. The Five-Year Strategic Plan that the Board approved this year, resulting from the work of more than 250 community members, represents an ambitious, positive vision for the district. The plan promises educational excellence and equity for every student. The plan represents a compelling vision of what our schools will be. I am running again to see that vision become a reality.
To meet our challenges and maintain our progress, I ask for your vote on April 18th.
